Murphy’s Law Against My Will

Ever notice that the moment you decide to change your life, every obstacle seems to suddenly rise up against you? I mean, things already have to be pretty bad to get someone to change their behavior. The last thing they need is to have to deal with unexpected “calamities”. Yet, this is exactly what Murphy’s Law predicts. Murphy says¬†“Anything that can go wrong, will — at the worst possible moment.”

This month I made a life-changing decision to get out of debt, stay out of debt, and build wealth. I have made a budget, cut out all non-essential items, and made huge changes in lifestyle by cooking at home, socializing with friends over coffee at their house instead of dinner out, selling things to raise money, renting out a room in my house, and taking on all kinds of side hustles to increase my income.

In total, I paid off $1550 of debt this month, and put $1000 in an emergency savings account. I even contributed $250 to my 401k! This is an incredible accomplishment for me. Especially considering that I work a full-time job and started a 20-hr a week UNPAID internship for my graduate program.

We’re in the last week of the month and suddenly I was faced with a debt that had gone into collections, discovered I need shoulder surgery which will cost me close to $1000 out-of-pocket, and now I find out I OWE $1200 on my taxes!! UGHHHHH!!

I felt defeated at learning about both of these unexpected bills and the upcoming cost of surgery. I am trying so hard- I needed to feel rewarded. Not defeated.

So, I am choosing to see the “bright side of things”.

I DID pay off $1550 worth of debt in 1 month. That is AWESOME!!!

I DID have most of the money I need to cover my tax bill because I put $1000 into an emergency savings account.

I DID negotiate a lower settlement fee on the unexpected bill that had been placed into collections.

BEST of all – I DID FOLLOW THROUGH on my plans to pay off debt, stay out of debt, and build wealth. I didn’t buy a single thing all month! These were small baby steps, but I’m going in the right direction and I won’t get discouraged!!
